On the whole, one person’s brain is the same colour as the next.
But the different tissues in the brain are different colours. Especially “white matter” and “grey matter”. White matter is nerve cells that have a special covering called a myelinated sheath that helps to speed up the signals. Grey matter is nerve cells that do not have this.
There are some parts of the brain that are a darker grey/red colour, like the Substantia nigra – which is the bit that make dopamine and is important in Parkinson’s disease. They are darker because they contain neuromelanin.
