I think you have to have a passion for science, and have to be a little clever. Sometimes luck is also a part of it. you have to be able to understand what you are doing to make changes to it to make it better or to understand why it didn’t work so you do have to have that sort of intelligence. Also a passion is needed because a lot of the time it wont work so you have to have this passion otherwise you would just feel defeated. But you dont have to be clever at everything. I have dyslexia so cant spell very well but still means I can be a great scientist.
I believe everybody is clever. To become a scientists you (usually) have to go to university, so you need to be good at academic stuff. But you don’t necessarily have to go to university to become a scientists. And you certainly don’t need to be a scientist to discover or invent things. As long as you keep a good record of everything, and keep asking questions, you’re pretty much already a scientist anyway. Anyway, “knowing” stuff (not all of which is necessarily true) can hamper your creativity… so if you do want to be a scientists, try to keep hold of your creative side too…. it’s important (and they can’t teach you creativity at university)
I wasn’t the cleverest person in my class. What I did though was work really really really hard. I still do sports and music after school, but I always made sure that I worked and revised hard and did more work than other people! If you are really clever that will help, but you have to be really excited and passionated about science too. I am really passionate about sleep and this comes across when I talk to people and sometimes people appreciate that more than being incredible clever!!! Also, I reckon all people have some clever bits in them. You are probably clever-er than me at a lot of things! I am sure you are!
