I would be unbelievably appreciative!! So so happy! I have always worked with children that go to schools which might not be very good. I went to a school which wasn’t very good when I was there, and I would have really really loved it if someone came it to tell us all about science. This means that sometimes these children might not be able to hear about things like ‘I’m a Scientist Get Me Out of Here’ and might not know there are scientists that can tell them all about science! I really want to use the money to go into these schools and give them some lessons about sleep and let them know there are people out there which can talk to them about science. I live in Wales and in Wales there are some areas which don’t have a lot of money. I don’t want these children to not be able to learn the things that most other children do because of the lack of money.

It would be fantastic for us…

I’m on the board for Driving Midlothian’s Young Workforce. We have identified that the main areas where learners will attains work in the STEM subjects.

The schools in Midlothian are pretty poor and it’s too far to come into the city to learn more about STEM. So I’m organising a number of projects to help schools in Midlothian.

One of them is a P7 transition STEM competition, where the P7 (Scottish primaries go to P7) kids come to the Secondary school in the summer to do a STEM competition… it’s judged by STEM Ambassadors (I’m also one of these) which means the kids actually get to spend time with scientists and engineers. The winners get a prize.

I’ve designed a 4 year programme that will spread out across the whole region, and I’ve just heard that this will be funded.

The other two projects are equipment pools…

The first is a pool of pipettes that will be shared by the 30 primary school in Midlothian. STEM Ambassadors will visit the schools to show the students and teachers (helps with CPD too!) who they work. Using a pipette is the most common activity in biology and chemistry and really gives an idea of what the day-to-day is like for a wet-lab scientist. THIS is what the £500 would be spent on.

The third is an equipment pool to deliver the “A question of taste” workshop as secondary school in midlothian. We’re still ironing out the details, but I’m working with Janet Paterson (who delievers this workshop in the city) and Andrew Jones (head of science at my local secondary school, Beeslack) to get this off the ground. We need to apply for money, but by making this a new project and staffing it with STEM ambassadors, we’re much more likely to succeed in getting the money to extend this project so kids in Midlothian actually have access to it. Otherwise they don’t.

Honestly would be amazing. I have been building up a stall to take to festivals for the last year and just need a little bit more money to make it a reality. We have done a couple of school events that have been great but we need a little more Lego (which I use to demonstrate how molecules stack) and some more microscopes to really make it a stall I can take round the UK so more people can understand the world of vaccum science from primary school age upwards. We’ve had such good feed back so far when we have been around london that it would be a shame to let it go, so yes I think it would make my year to win. Although just the experience itself is also very rewarding, so much and really does break up my day.

I would be epic happy! It is always a nice feeling to be chosen by many smart children.
But the most important reason is the prize money would enable me to get involved with Science Communication even more. I have so many plans, helping the STEM clubs and make activities with the student if Cutteslowe Primary School. I also want to usesome if the money towards my instagram (sciency_mama) account to improve it and spread the word to the whole world where there is internet there is access to information!
