There are lots and lots of different syndromes. Genetic syndromes (what I work with) are there from the beginning and when we are born. However, this doesn’t mean that we realise this when a baby is born. It might take a long time to work out that someone has a syndrome, and it might seem like a random part of their lives when they realise they have a syndrome. Not all syndromes occurs at birth, the ones I work with do, but some other syndromes can be caused by things we do in life and places we go. Syndromes can occur at anytime in our lives and even some genetic syndromes might not be obvious until we are older. The sleeping part – this is really interesting. We might not get syndromes during sleeping, but we definitely have problems sleeping because of syndromes.

Most diseases have versions that are hereditary – the person has them at brith – or acquired – the person gets them later. It’s the same with sleep syndromes.
