In the cretaceous period (when there were massive dinosaurs) there were much higher levels of Oxygen in the atmosphere which meant that big animals could live. Maybe something similar happened in the pleitocene?

The pleistocene era was from about 2.6 million years ago to about 11 thousand years ago.

The world changed an awful lot during this time.

There were a whole bunch of ice ages and the world looked pretty different during them than it did between. And the animals that could survive these changes were find, while others had to migrate or die out. The sea levels were continuously changing, as were the coasts around the world. Bit of land were connected and disconnected by the changing levels.

The contitents were pretty much where they are now though.

The world was very different to how it is now. Actaully during about this time, Homo sapiens evolved, and by the end of this era humans could be found in nearly every part of the planet. Cool, huh:)
