Good question! It is a lot to do with hormones which change whilst we sleep. There is a hormone called ‘leptin’. This makes us control how hungry we are. If we didn’t have leptin we would all be really really fat! When we are sleeping leptin is low and this means we aren’t hungry. It increases before we wake up though! It also depends on when you ate before bed and another hormone called ‘grehlin’. Grehlin makes our stomachs stretch a bit to eat food! Grehlin increased over sleep to make us be able to eat when we wake up. 🙂
