It has caffeine in it, which is a stimulant, meaning it keeps us active and awake. Essentially it is a drug.

It’s actually not true that caffeine keeps you awake. It is a stimulant, but if you are tired, it won’t necessarily stop you from sleeping (but your sleep will be different)

Oh I know all about this one. Coffee has caffeine. What caffeine does is interact with some little molecules in your brain. These molecules usually help you to get tired and go to sleep. What caffeine does it talk to these little molecules and stop them from building up and making you sleep. The caffeine pushes back the time you would normally go to sleep (so makes bedtime later) and keeps you awake for longer. It won’t necessarily wake you up if you are really tired, and it won’t necessarily stop you from sleeping. It will affect your sleep though.
