We I have someone who pays me. Although when it comes down to what I want to do in the lab I am pretty free. As long as its not dangerous and I can tell him why I’ve done it, I can do it. If its something very far from what I was researching before I have to have a very good reason for doing, but if I have a greta idea my “boss” just says go for it.
Yes, technically many people do. But in my situation as well, sinilar to Maddy and Chris, I am not told what to do on a regular basis. Pretty much free to do whatever I like. Saying that, I do meet my boss regularly and he almost always has a vague idea of what I am up to. 🙂
I have a line-manager. He’s responsible for making sure I’m doing okay. On the whole, scientists don’t really need a boss to tell them what to do. Many scientists now more than their boss about what they’re studying anyway. And we’re a very self-motivated bunch.
I do indeedy. Her name is Marianne and she is from Holland! She is my supervisor so to me that means she is my boss. She makes sure I do all my work and keep on target!! In science though it is really cool because you get freedom to do what you want (as long as your supervisor agrees!) Haha.
