The universe is opened up into one big universe! The universe is everything there is or ever was. Right now it is almost 100 billion light years across.

to follow what Chris said, a light-year is the distance that light can travel in a year (in a vacuum, like space)

The speed of light is 670,616,629 mph. Going at the speed of light you can go around the Earth 7.5 times in one second.

So in one year, light can travel about 5,874,600,000,000 miles. So in 100 billion years, light can travel about 587,460,000,000,000,000,000,000 miles… about a half a trillion trillion miles.
