  One idea is that the earth formed from planetoids – small little rocks that collided to form bigger rocks and gradually over time this collisions produced the earth and other rocky planets like mars and venus and mercury.

Probably a big chunk of the earth came from a collision with another big rock the size of mars… part of which got flung up into orbit and became the moon. Before this collision the earth was a lot smaller
