It all started with Big Bang. You can remember it like this:

      First there was nothing,
      Then there was the bang,
      Then there was everything!

When the Banggg!! happened the universe formed and it had lots of clouds of space dust and gas. It was super hot and started spinning sooo fast. Things started clumping together and at the same time spinning really fast. These clumps eventually became the planets! The center of this dust cloud became the STAR which is the SUN in our solar system. And, the planets kept spinning around this center…even now everything is spinning… 🙂

Planets form by stuff coming together… it could be gas or liquid or solid, but it all clumps together by the power of gravity. Things move because they are already moving, or because a force acts on them, like a gravitational force… e.g. the gravity of the sun. Planets that orbit a sun are moving because they have momentum – they won’t stop. But they move in a circle because the sun is always pulling them towards it. Like if you swing a yoyo around, it goes round in a circle. That’s because the string pulls it towards your finger… like the sun it pulling the planet. -eventually though the yogo will stop because the frction of the air slows it down. But in space there is no air, so the planets just keep going.
