That’s a good question – sometimes they just come to you out of the blue.

Reading papers helps, as does getting away from your work and just doing something else for a while! relaxes the brain.

Chatting a lot, me and my group will read some other peoples research then we can sit around the table with tea and just chat, if we think the other people were wrong or right, how this affects what we do, maybe we could try using something they have done on our samples. Talking is the key. Although sometimes they come from mistakes as well, you just have to go with what science gives you!

Most of my ideas come from other things, kinda randomly. But it’s really how you develop and idea that means it’ll be successful or not. It’s a good to talk to people and get their opinion, to search and read scientific articles to see if others have had smilar ideas, what problems they faced and how they dealt with them, and always to keep a record of your decisions and the reasons for making them.

I know this is ridiculous but bathroom is a good place for ideas 🙂 When you are not concentrating on anything else but your project, your mind clears and comes up with the best ideas ever!

Also talking to other people about your project can give you lots of ideas as well!! 🙂

Sometimes I think of my ideas when I am talking to other scientists, sometimes when I talk to families. Sometimes I get my ideas from talking to friends and families. I get inspiration from lots of different places and that is what makes it more exciting!! I always like to have different inspiration and different ideas. Bringing all the ideas together from different places is how my ideas become great (or at least good!) Just having ideas from scientists makes my ideas very similar. Having lots of different ideas means I can make a bigger difference and understand all the different views and people involved.
