Parkinson’s can also be caused by those neurons malfunctioning… normally they resease dopmine, a neurotransmitter. But sometime the cells can fail to make or release dopamine (and other steps in between) which can cause Parkinson’s. If the neurons are making dopamine and not releasing it, they will eventually die anyway, because dopamine itself is very toxic to cells. Some of the drugs are to replace the dopamine that is missing, but in the long term this approach actually damages the remaining neurons more. A more recent study showed that it is possible to re-generate neurons in this part of the brain using stem cells.
