I think it is a big topic we need to look into more. I think it could be useful in some countries where it is very hard to grow crops. I think that is a very good question though. Everyone will have a different view.

GM mean genetic modification. This means that genes have been added or changed. There are different reasons for doing this. One is to make animals or plant produce more food. I think this is okay for plants, but can be cruel for animals.

To be honest, I don’t really like modern farming anyway, and GM is only a small part of that.

Another reason for GM is pest resistance… that is when a plant is given a gene that can kill insects. This is not great for the environment.

A danger with GM is that plant are very good at passing on genes to other plants and if a gene got out of control it might be devastating.

But, in some part of the world people struggle to make enough food, and in these places the risk of GM is totally justified, in my opinion.

You can get genetically modified food in two different ways.
      1) by manipulating what nature does already(mutations that make things better or worse-has been happening for a long time now :))
      2) by literally changing the genetic material of foods/animals in the lab.

Because we can get much more efficient food just by cross breeding-which is like crossing the best crops to each other and waiting to see which ones would be much better and then continuing farming those instead of the weak looking ones. This has been done for corn, tomatoes and many other veggies out there for a long time…so-this is absolutely ok.

However, in this era, we are also capable of modifying the genome/genetic material of foods in the lab and I think this generally freaks the public out. Personally, I do not have a big problem with GM food as long as the modification process was well controlled and if it has no adverse effect on us. And, up to now, there is no data that suggests otherwise.

So, when necessary I say GMO is alright!

I think it depends, and also I am not an expert at this, so don’t know all the facts. They say it is safe, but the long term consequences still need to be investigated I’d say. But if people need food, it is probably a risk worth taking, afterall we all eat it anyway!
