It’s to do with the chemistry that happens in your body.

We use food as an energy source. But the way we unlock that energy is that our cells combine the food with oxygen in a chemical reaction. The product of the reaction is carbon dioxide, water, and energy that the cell can use… e.g. your muscle cells use the energy to contract the muscles.

But you also need to get rid of the carbon dioxide. The gases are exchanged in your lungs… oxygen from the air goes into the blood, and carbon diaoxide from the blood goes into the air.

we breathe oxygen/air so we can use it to burn food and gain energy! ?

We need oxygen to be able to breathe!!! Woo! Oxygen is essential for us to be able to breathe and all of the cells in our body to ‘respire’. This means to be able to use sugars and make our muscles work, our lungs breathe and our digestive system work. Air is important because we also need carbon dioxide, but that is usually useful for plants! Plants need to use carbon dioxide from the air to make sugars too! So what is cool as that we use oxygen to help with making our body work and muscles move, then we let out carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide then is taken up by plants and used to make oxygen, which then humans breathe in!! Wahoo!!
