Obesity, medically speaking in the UK, means that you have a body mass index of over 30. (BMI is weight in kg divided by square of height in meters)

This puts you at risk of lots of diseases, which can kill you.

Many of the risks are because of the weight… e.g. increase weight on the joints causes joint problems… increased blood volume/pressure causes heart problems.

Many of the risks are because of the *cause* of the weight… the person is eating too much or not exercising enough or both… e.g. diabetes can be because of diet, mental health can be damaged by lack of exercise.

Also, the fat tissue itself has an effect on hormones (the body’s chemical messengers) that can cause increased risk of cancer, reproductive problems, etc.

Many of these diseases can kill. Many can put you in hospital… and being obese increases your risk during surgery because it’s more difficult to regulate the drugs used for anaesthetic.

      There are lots of reasons!

Obesity is linked to the fact that your BMI (like Jimi said below) is over 30. This pressure on your body and the weight you put on can have some serious affects on your body. The weight is usually fat, but sometimes it can be muscle. However, when it is fat there is also fat around our organs and maybe there are blockages in blood vessels too as a result of your diet and what you eat. So when there is too much fatty tissues, the weight can increase the risk of developing some diseases. It is things like heart disease and high cholesterol as well as things like respiratory disease and problems with the blood circulation in your legs and arm (and other places). There are changes in your hormones too which means that you can put on more weight or not lose it easily. All of these things added to surgery (which could save you) being very difficult when you are overweight and is very risky because more drugs are needed to put you asleep. Obesity is very risky being linked to type 2 diabetes too.

Obesity can kill one person in so many different ways but the most common one is by fat accumulating in your blood vessels and getting a heart attack.

      Gotta watch the weight 🙂
